The Terroirs of Ducru-Beaucaillou

La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou is produced from vineyards of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou distributed across the Saint-Julien appellation, from sites near the Gironde estuary through the centre and west of the appellation.

The estate takes its name from its celebrated “beaux cailloux” — beautiful pebbles — referring to the quartz-rich gravel soils that define its terroir.

These naturally poor, free-draining soils are particularly well suited to producing structured, refined Médoc wines.

Saint-Julien · Médoc

Vineyard parcels closer to the Gironde occupy the rolling gravel ridges of the Médoc, while other plots benefit from local microclimatic influences within Saint-Julien.

Together, these distinct vineyard environments contribute to the original terroir expression associated with La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou.

Official Blend Style

La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou is traditionally a Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux blend.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon: Approximately 60% in a typical year
  • Merlot Noir: Approximately 35–37%
  • Petit Verdot: Approximately 3–5%

Petit Verdot contributes a subtle spicy accent to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot-dominant blend.

Important: These are the estate’s general proportions for La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou and are not presented as the exact assemblage of the 2016 vintage.
