Michel Couvreur Overaged Malt Whisky (70cl)

Michel Couvreur Overaged Malt Whisky is his flagship, blending malt spirits distilled in Scotland and, in Michel's signature style, maturing them in different ex-Sherry casks in his cellars in Burgundy. Though this carries no age statement, the Overaged Malt is matured a minimum 12 years.

The result is a classic sherried whisky, blending a whiff of peat smoke and honey with bags of dried fruit, chocolate and Christmas cake.

The Overaged is a medium peaty blended malt aged in Oloroso sherry casks. We do not know the different distilleries involved, as always with Les Couvreurs, but some of the whiskeys involved in its blending are over 20 years old, hence the “Overaged”. All the whiskeys present in the blend have aged in Pedro Ximenez barrels.

The nose starts with toasted wood, which brings its share of spices with cumin. A beautiful floral note then arrives accompanied by peat. The latter drags in its wake a note of tobacco which occurs just after the raisins bring a little fruitiness.

On the palate, we find the very oily and syrupy texture usual for Couvreurs. We find the wood and its spices entry. It is more fruity than the nose with still raisins but also plums and a discreet hint of oranges. The peat smoke is then recalled to our fond memories with a touch of honey.

The finish is long, on peat, pepper and cocoa.

TASTING NOTES

The Overaged Malt Whisky is a vatting of Scotish single malts aged between 12 and 27 years in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks from day 1 (not a simple finish, but whole maturation in quality PX casks). It has been reduced to 43% alcohol by volume. EYE: beige amber tint. NOSE: fragrance of dried flowers, flaxen tobacco, sherry wine, fat almond, a little smoked. PALATE: fruity, powerful and long in the mouth. Aimed at a balance between new pure young malts and fathomless maturity of older ones. End of mouth: sherry roundness enhanced by a slightly smoked.
