Official Description

Château Mouton Rothschild, elevated to Premier Grand Cru Classé status in 1973, is one of the most prestigious estates in Pauillac. Known for its Cabernet Sauvignon– dominant blend and deep gravel terroir, the château produces wines of structure, aromatic intensity, and long ageing capacity.

The 1978 vintage expresses classic Left Bank character in mature form — structured, elegant, and layered with tertiary complexity developed over decades of bottle ageing.

Key Characteristics
  • Premier Grand Cru Classé (1855 Classification)
  • Cabernet Sauvignon–led Pauillac structure
  • Mature vintage with developed tertiary notes
  • Highly collectible First Growth estate
  • Suitable for vertical tastings and fine wine dinners
Tasting & Serving Notes

Mature expressions of 1978 Pauillac typically reveal cedar, cassis, cigar box, leather, dried fruit, and earthy undertones. The palate shows resolved tannins, balanced acidity, and a long, structured finish characteristic of Cabernet-led First Growth Bordeaux.

Serve at 16–18°C. Stand upright 12–24 hours before opening to allow sediment to settle. Decant gently to separate sediment while preserving delicate aromatics.

Pairing Ideas

Pair with roast lamb, prime rib, beef tenderloin, duck, game dishes, or aged hard cheeses. Ideal for formal dining and collector-focused tastings.
