Château Pichon Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville 1971

Deuxième Grand Cru Classé en 1855 · Pauillac

Pauillac, Bordeaux Red Wine 1971 Vintage 750ml

Description

Château Pichon Longueville au Baron de Pichon-Longueville 1971 is a historic mature Bordeaux from the Pauillac estate now known as Château Pichon Baron. The estate has held the rank of Deuxième Grand Cru Classé since the Bordeaux Classification of 1855.

Produced more than five decades ago, this bottle offers collectors an opportunity to acquire an older expression from one of Pauillac's distinguished classified estates. Its appeal lies in its age, scarcity, provenance and connection to an earlier period in the history of Bordeaux.

At this stage of maturity, the wine's condition and potential performance depend substantially on the individual bottle's provenance, long-term storage, fill level, cork integrity and overall physical condition.

The product title used here follows the historic label-facing form associated with this vintage. In contemporary auction catalogues and fine-wine listings, the same wine is commonly presented as Château Pichon-Longueville Baron or Château Pichon Longueville Baron.

Mature Wine & Bottle Condition

Historic wines evolve individually in bottle, and significant variation may exist between bottles from the same vintage. The present internal condition of the wine cannot be determined from its producer, classification or vintage alone.

Customers should review the actual bottle photographs and all available condition information, including the fill level, label, capsule, cork position and any visible evidence of seepage. Any bottle-specific condition description supplied with the wine should be considered an integral part of the product listing.

BBPH Serving Suggestions

  • Stand the bottle upright for at least 24–48 hours before opening so sediment can settle.
  • Serve at approximately 16–17°C.
  • Use an Ah-So, Durand or another specialist old-vintage cork extractor.
  • Open slowly and carefully, as an older cork may be fragile.
  • Decant gently only when necessary to separate the wine from sediment.
  • Assess the wine immediately after opening before deciding whether additional aeration is appropriate.
  • Serve promptly if its mature aromatics begin to fade after opening.

BBPH Pairing Suggestions

  • Roast lamb
  • Roast duck or pigeon
  • Beef tenderloin
  • Wild mushroom dishes
  • Black truffle risotto

About Château Pichon Baron

The Pichon Baron estate traces its history to 1694, when Thérèse de Rauzan married Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville. In 1850, the historic Pichon property was divided, with Baron Raoul Pichon de Longueville's portion becoming the estate now known as Château Pichon Baron.

The estate's Grand Vin was recognised as a Deuxième Grand Cru Classé in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. The Pichon de Longueville family sold the property to the Bouteiller family in 1933, and AXA Millésimes acquired it in 1987.

Historic bottles may carry earlier forms of the estate's name, while the property and its Grand Vin are currently presented under the name Château Pichon Baron.

Collector's Notice

This is a mature collectible wine. Natural variation between bottles should be expected. Age-related wear to the label, capsule and cork, together with variation in fill level, may be present and does not by itself establish the wine's internal condition.

Please review the actual bottle photographs and stated condition before purchase. Unless expressly stated otherwise, any reconstructed product image is illustrative and may not reproduce the exact bottle, label, capsule, fill level or merchant markings of the bottle supplied.
