The Terroirs of Ducru-Beaucaillou

The wines of La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou come from the vineyards of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, situated across an exceptional Médoc terroir extending from the Gironde River in the east through the centre and west of the Saint-Julien appellation.

The estate takes its name from its celebrated “beaux cailloux” — beautiful pebbles — whose high quartz content contributes to soils naturally poor in plant nutrients.

This geological poverty is precisely what makes the terroir particularly suited to the production of fine wine.

Saint-Julien · Médoc

In the eastern part of the estate, vineyard plots occupy the rolling gravel ridges of the Médoc immediately above the Gironde estuary.

Plots at the centre of the appellation benefit from a microclimate influenced by the small La Mouline stream, which crosses Saint-Julien from west to east before flowing into the Gironde.

These distinct vineyard environments contribute to the original expression of terroir that defines La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou.

Official Blend Style

La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou is traditionally a Cabernet Sauvignon-led Bordeaux blend.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon: Approximately 60% each year
  • Merlot Noir: Approximately 35–37%
  • Petit Verdot: Approximately 3–5%

Petit Verdot contributes a subtly spicy accent to the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot-dominant blend.

Note: These are the estate’s general proportions for La Croix Ducru-Beaucaillou and should not be interpreted as the exact assemblage of the 2014 vintage.
