Rustenberg Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 (1.5L)

The Peter Barlow, derives it’s name from the man who bought the property and lovingly restored it to become a South African icon in the wine industry. Being made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the oldest vineyard on the estate, the Peter Barlow is a rich, robust varietal example of the exceptional quality and ageability of Cabernet made on the Estate and in the Simonsberg region. A highly collected wine which will age gracefully under the correct cellaring conditions. Tasting notes: Concentrated cassis, black cherries and some herbaceousness on the nose and palate. Expensive oak notes mingle happily with dark fruit aromas & intense flavours. Well balanced & already winning, but very firm structure demands aging. Long sweet-fruited finish. Vinous 90 points - The 2015 Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon was matured for 24 months in 64% new oak. It has more finesse and complexity than the John X Merriman, featuring blackberry, briar and bilberry fruit mixed with mint and cedar. The palate is well balanced with a grippy entry, nicely judged acidity and a lightly spiced, mint- and clove-infused finish. Again, I would have liked more precision to show through on the finish, but it is clearly Rusternberg’s best offering this vintage. (Aug 2018) Decanter 90 points - Complex aromas of leafy black fruit, coffee and clove. Sleek elegant texture if still a little tannic, with a woody ’bite’ to balance the evident ripeness.
