2018 CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Napa Valley

The nose of this wine is layered and multi-faceted, exploding with savory aromas of cedar, coffee, bay laurel, eucalyptus, rosemary, pine/oak forest, chaparral, and sage, all lifted by a captivating floral perfume redolent of iris and violets. Blue fruit aromas of blackberries and blueberries linger in the background, gradually evolving into notes of loam and clay. In the mouth, the wine shows its incredible energy and vibrancy, power and density. The flavors mirror the aromas of mouthwatering savory notes reverberating with fresh acidity. The wine and the tannins are dense, yet the tannins are super fine grained and resolve effortlessly in the mouth.

Notes from winemaker Nigel Kinsman,

“A textural, intellectual wine, so beautifully built, quietly confident, distinguished and subtle, with a precise, classic structure. It’s like a ballerina: graceful, elegant and refined, but with immense power and strength.”

WINEGROWING INFORMATION

2018 in Napa Valley will be remembered as a stellar growing season, a welcome change from some very warm temperatures in previous years; in terms of tons crushed, it was a record-breaking vintage. After soaking rains in March and April, fruitful buds and consistent temperatures during bloom in late May resulted in almost perfect fruit set.
Summer months were characterized by mild temperatures, and with veraison finishing in July, the full clusters benefit- ted from long hang times in cool weather, maintaining their freshness and acidity. Winemakers were giddy with expectation as the generous crop continued to ripen slowly and evenly during superb September weather conditions, delaying the need to harvest; our first pick of Cabernet Sauvignon was not until October 1st. Our long, leisurely harvest was completed on October 20th with Petit Verdot from Thorevilos Vineyard. The grapes were all harvested by hand and brought to Wheeler Farms Winery for crush. The resulting wine was aged in new and used French oak barrels for 21 months and bottled on July 23rd, 2020.

ACCOLADES

2018 CABERNET SAUVIGNON
Napa Valley

100pts

“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is extraordinary. Inky, rich and explosive, with stunning depth, the 2018 is insanely beautiful right out of the botle.
Blackberry, mocha, licorice, red plum, spice, leather and cedar all build as this rich, explosive Cabernet shows o its pedigree. The 2018 is quite simply the finest wine I have tasted yet at Accendo. Far from an easygoing 2018, the Accendo Cabernet is going to need a number of years to be at its very best. A remarkable, mind-blowing wine, it is quite clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Vineyard sources are Vine Hill Ranch, Sleeping Lady, DMVH and Ecotone, which is prety much as good, or great, as it gets.”
Antonio Galloni, Vinous, February 2021

98+pts

“The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. The Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from Vine Hill Ranch and Sleeping Lady vineyards, the Cabernet Franc came from Diamond Mountain and the Petit Verdot is from the old Abreu Thorevilos vineyard (now called Ecotone). Deep garnet-purple in color, it leaps from the glass with classic cassis, warm plums and boysenberries scents plus nuances of violets, lavender, pencil lead and menthol with hints of crushed rock and tilled soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house, framed by firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness with super intense black fruit and earthy layers, finishing long and mineral laced. 995 cases were made.”
Lisa Peroti Brown, Wine Advocate, February 2021

97pts

“A lush and inviting style, with gorgeous, velvety waves of cassis, steeped plum and warmed blackberry preserves rolling along, underscored with black licorice and roasted vanilla throughout. The finish is seriously deep and long, with a subtle tug of warm loam lingering with the fruit. Hard to lay o now for its fruid, but this has loads in reserve for the cellar. Drink now through 2040.”
James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, July 2021
