Château Pichon Baron 2001

2nd Grand Cru Classé en 1855 · Pauillac

Pauillac, Bordeaux Red Wine 2001 Vintage 750ml

Description

Château Pichon Baron 2001 is the Grand Vin of one of Pauillac's historic Second Growth estates. It is produced from the estate's oldest vines growing within its historic vineyard parcels.

The 2001 blend is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, supported by Merlot and a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. The château describes the vintage as combining depth, spice, refined tannins and considerable length, with elegance remaining central to its character.

Careful vineyard work, selective harvesting at optimal ripeness and rigorous sorting contributed to the quality of the final selection. The wine was matured for 15 months using both new barrels and barrels previously used for one vintage.

Official Product Highlights

  • Grand Vin of Château Pichon Baron
  • Produced from the oldest vines on the estate's historic parcels
  • 2nd Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification
  • Pauillac appellation
  • Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend
  • Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels

Official Vintage Conditions

The château carried out extensive thinning and leaf removal throughout the vineyard to retain the best-positioned and best-exposed bunches. Particular attention was given to ripening, allowing each grape variety to be harvested at optimal maturity.

The harvested fruit was subjected to extremely strict sorting before vinification.

  • Merlot Harvest: September 28 to October 4, 2001
  • Cabernet Franc Harvest: October 5, 2001
  • Cabernet Sauvignon Harvest: October 6 to 12, 2001

Official Tasting Note

The wine displays a deep purple colour. Its aromatic profile is expressive and spicy, with a distinctive note of white pepper.

The palate is marked by clean, distinguished tannins of notable finesse. Balanced acidity supports the wine's elegance and reflects the ripeness achieved during the vintage.

The finish is exceptionally long, reinforcing the wine's depth and ageing potential.

Based on the tasting note by Jean-René Matignon, Technical Director, dated November 2007.
